When my husband, Scot, and I first visited the Texas Hill Country in 2017, we fell in love. You’d think it was the wine that captured our hearts — and truthfully, the wine is wonderful — but what really drew us in were the people. There’s a generosity of spirit here, a sense of connection and community that’s hard to put into words but easy to feel.
The wine, food, and hospitality — along with the charming shops that line the small-town squares — are just an added bonus. Every visit feels like a reminder that life doesn’t have to move fast to be full.
If you’re planning your own trip to wine country, here’s my first piece of advice: slow down.
Make reservations at the wineries you want to visit — most tasting rooms in the Hill Country are intimate, and space fills quickly. Plan for no more than three wineries in a day (two is ideal), and hire a driver so you can truly enjoy the experience. My favorites are Cellar Rat Wine Tours and Hill Country Wine Tours — both are local, knowledgeable, and make the day effortless.
Give yourself time between tastings to explore, wander, and take in the scenery. The Hill Country was never meant to be rushed — and honestly, neither are you.
Since the release of my debut cookbook, The Vineyard Table, that feeling of connection has only deepened. This book has reinforced what I’ve always known to be true about the Hill Country: it thrives on collaboration. The winemakers, chefs, farmers, and shop owners here genuinely want to see one another succeed. It’s a rising-tide-lifts-all-ships kind of place, and I’m grateful to be part of it.
While I’m an ardent supporter of the Texas wine industry, I’ve also discovered a handful of exciting tasting rooms — both established and new — that deserve a visit. These are places I’ve personally experienced and loved, not suggestions pulled from an algorithm. Along the way, I’ll share favorite spots to stay, eat, and shop too.
So buckle up, pour yourself a glass, and come along for the ride. This is my guide to savoring the Texas Hill Country — one vineyard, one meal, one story at a time.
There’s a rhythm to wine tasting in the Hill Country — the winding roads, the changing light, and the sense that each stop tells its own story. I’ve had the joy of collaborating with some of the most talented winemakers in Texas, and I’m continually inspired by their passion and creativity.
Uplift Vineyard – Located in Burnet, Uplift Vineyard is an estate winery meaning all the wine made, comes from that property. Winemaker Claire Richardson crafts elegant, expressive wines that showcase the heart of Texas terroir. The experience is both educational and relaxed, just the way wine should be. Reservations are necessary and are only open on the weekend.

William Chris Vineyards – Few places define Texas wine like William Chris Vineyards. They’re pioneers in sustainable farming and champions for authentic, place-driven wines. Their Chef’s Table experience is a must — a pairing of seasonal bites with their most expressive vintages, all guided by an expert host.
If you visit on a Saturday or Sunday, expect the soft hum of live music drifting through the vines — a soundtrack to slow living and long conversations. Reservations are strongly recommended.
Ab Astris – If you want to sit outside and loose yourself in Texas scenery while drinking incredible wine, this is your spot. Located off of 290 in Stonewall (behind Lyndon B. Johnson National Park off of Ranch Road 1) you will feel all of your stress disappear and you look across the fields and vines. This family-owned winery offers a variety of red varietals and blends, along with dry whites. My favorite is their zinfandel. Reservations recommended on the weekend.

Elisa Christopher Winery – Husband-and-wife team Elisa and Christopher have created something truly special in their boutique winery, where Elisa leads as winemaker. Her sparkling wines are a standout — refined, joyful, and full of personality — and her devoted fans have even formed a sparkling wine club called the “Bubbleheads.”
While every sip reflects her skill and passion, my current favorite among her reds is the Amélie, a lush and balanced blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec. It’s the kind of wine that invites conversation and lingers long after the last glass.
Calais Winery – Tucked into the hillside of Hye, Calais Winery is one of the Hill Country’s most remarkable gems — both for its unique setting and its wines. The tasting room itself feels like a hidden retreat carved right into the earth, a cool and quiet space where the focus stays squarely on what’s in the glass. Winemaker and owner Ben Calais crafts exceptional Bordeaux-style wines that rival some of the best far beyond Texas. Each pour reflects precision, patience, and a deep respect for terroir.
✨ Reservations are required, and well worth planning ahead for.
French Connection – Just up the hill on Hye-Albert Road, Ben and his wife Victoria have created a second experience with French Connection Wines — a vibrant expression of their shared passion for Rhône-style varietals. Here, guests can enjoy beautifully balanced whites, rosés, and reds while taking in sweeping Hill Country views that seem to stretch forever. It’s the perfect place to sip slowly and let time slip away — where the wines are every bit as captivating as the view itself.

Vinovium – For a more relaxed, social vibe, Vinovium is a must-visit. This downtown spot blends the best of Texas wine, good food, and late-night energy — a refreshing twist on traditional tasting rooms.
It’s one of my favorite lunch spots in the Hill Country, offering thoughtful bites that pair beautifully with their rotating list of wines. Vinovium also serves wine on tap and in growlers, showcasing selections from a variety of talented Texas winemakers. It’s approachable, modern, and full of community spirit — exactly what Texas wine should be.
Siboney Cellars – A little taste of Cuba in the Texas Hill Country — Siboney Cellars brings warmth, rhythm, and charm to every visit. The name pays homage to a beloved Cuban song written by the great-uncle of one of the owners, and that deep sense of heritage shows in everything they do.

On Thursday evenings and Monday lunches, they serve the best Cuban sandwiches I’ve ever had, along with exceptional cheese and charcuterie boards and — of course — a fine selection of cigars to enjoy with their wines. It’s an unexpected pairing that works beautifully, a perfect blend of Hill Country ease and Cuban soul.
Not every great glass I love comes from Texas — and that’s the beauty of being a bon vivant. The joy of wine lies in curiosity, in exploring the world one sip at a time. These tasting rooms and bars go beyond borders, yet each shares the same heart for craft, connection, and community.

Six Twists Sparkling – If bubbles make you smile, Six Twists Sparkling is your new happy place. Nestled just on the edge of downtown Fredericksburg, this chic tasting room celebrates all things effervescent — from Champagne to sparkling rosé.
Pair your glass with truffle fries and caviar for an experience that feels like Paris met the Hill Country. Still wines are available too, but let’s be honest — you’re here for the sparkle.
Ocotillo Chocolate and Wine– Tucked into the courtyard at Elk & Main, Ocotillo is a delightful surprise — a cozy nook where chocolate meets wine in the most delicious way. Using a self-serve wine station, you can taste 2-ounce pours of exceptional wines (some that might normally sit just out of reach).
It’s the perfect place to linger on a cool evening, nibbling on handmade bites or sipping drinking chocolate that’s as decadent as it sounds.
Calivence – A little slice of France in the heart of Texas. Calivence brings in its wines from Los Olivos, California, offering seasonal selections and perfectly curated food pairings. The space is chic yet approachable — think Provence with a Hill Country heartbeat.
Don’t miss their sparkling rosé — crisp, elegant, and perfect for toasting to slow, beautiful days.
Ferris & Fletch – Family-owned and full of heart, Ferris & Fletch is a charming downtown gem. Winemaker Rarig Ross and his wife, Ellery, have created a welcoming space where Texas meets California — literally. Their wines are sourced from both states, and their tasting room, named after their two oldest sons, feels like an afternoon in your best friend’s backyard (if your best friend happened to be a winemaker).
Bring the family, grab a seat, and stay awhile — it’s an oasis in the middle of Main Street.

Buli Limestone – When a winery’s motto is “Tuscan Charm — Texas Grit,” you know you’re in for something extraordinary. Buli Limestone captures the best of both worlds — the romance of Italy and the resilience of Texas.
Here, old-world craftsmanship meets new-world spirit. Guests are invited to sip and compare wines from both their Tuscan estate and Hill Country vineyards, each glass telling its own story of soil, sun, and patience. It’s an experience that beautifully bridges continents — proof that passion and place can create something truly timeless.
The food scene in the Hill Country reflects its people — creative, generous, and deeply rooted in local ingredients.
Cabernet Grill – When it comes to fine dining with Texas soul, Cabernet Grill is unmatched. Known for its chef-driven menu and the most extensive Texas wine list in the state, it’s where locals go to celebrate milestones or enjoy a romantic evening. Expect seasonal dishes that highlight local farms and ranches — and wines that tell the story of our terroir.
Reservations are essential (and note: they don’t take parties larger than six)
Vaudeville – Step downstairs from Vaudeville’s elegant retail space and you’ll find their bistro — a hidden gem serving French-inspired comfort with Texas charm. The menu changes daily, but expect things like chicken confit, quiche, and that irresistible Friday curry soup. Sundays are all about their famous fried chicken, so book early — it sells out fast.
Pro tip: pair your chicken with a bottle of Champagne from upstairs. It’s pure joy in a glass.

Prometheus Pizza – This isn’t your average pizza joint. Prometheus Pizza delivers creative pies, crisp salads, and some of the best calamari in town — all paired with an unexpectedly stellar wine list. The vibe is relaxed, with both indoor and outdoor seating, making it a favorite for a laid-back evening. No reservations, so go early or settle in with a glass while you wait.
Eaker Barbecue – Hands down, my favorite BBQ in the Hill Country. Lance and Boo Eaker have created something special — the perfect blend of classic Texas smokehouse and Korean-inspired flair. Recognized by Texas Monthly as one of the Top 50 BBQ Joints in 2021, it’s worth every bite. The gochujang ribs are legendary — tender, spicy, and utterly addictive. Bring friends, come hungry, and prepare to fall in love. not be disappointed.
Mesquite at the Warehouse – Don’t let the name fool you — while Mesquite is known for its steaks and hearty fare, the Caesar salad here might just change your life. Add a crab cake on top (trust me), and you’ve got a meal that’s simple, elegant, and unexpectedly perfect. The space has that Hill Country charm — rustic yet refined — and it’s one of my go-to spots for an unfussy, delicious dinner.

The right stay can transform your Hill Country experience into something truly restorative.
Whitetail Court Hotel – Tucked just a block off Main Street, Whitetail Court Hotel blends boutique charm with laid-back comfort. Its eight thoughtfully designed cottages surround a lovely courtyard that feels like a private retreat — complete with an ice cream shop that makes every stay just a little sweeter. The location couldn’t be more convenient for exploring town, yet it still feels delightfully peaceful.

With mid-century bones and contemporary finishes, it’s perfectly situated in the heart of the wine road — an ideal home base for a weekend of tasting and exploring. The setting is quiet and convenient, perfect for those who want easy access to wineries without giving up the serenity of a country escape. Convenient location for the wine road.

Their collection of garden cottages is perfect for a serene overnight stay — each one thoughtfully designed and just a short stroll from downtown. Whether you’re indulging in a massage, enjoying a meal on the patio, or wandering through the garden paths with a coffee in hand, this is a place that nourishes every sense.
After a few days of sipping, savoring, and soaking in the beauty of the Hill Country, a little shopping is the perfect way to round out your visit. From artful homewares and locally made treasures to boutiques brimming with effortless style, the Hill Country is full of thoughtfully curated spaces that reflect the same spirit of creativity and connection found at its tables and vineyards.
Small-town shopping is one of the pure joys of the Hill Country — a beautiful blend of heirloom finds, artisan goods, and pieces with soul. Every shop tells its own story, filled with character, craftsmanship, and a touch of that easy Hill Country charm.
The Market at Elk & Main – A favorite stop for locals and visitors alike, The Market at Elk & Main is a beautifully curated provisions market offering everything from gourmet sandwiches and house-made gelato to their own line of wine — each label hand-painted by local artist Ray Hadaway. The Haberdashery Boutique– The Haberdashery is my favorite clothing store in town — a treasure trove of effortless style. Their collection of dresses, shoes, and jewelry is always fresh and inspiring, with just the right mix of bohemian ease and refined detail. They even carry a small but thoughtful selection for men. Whether you’re shopping for an evening out or something easy for the weekend, it’s impossible to leave empty-handed.

The store blends vintage finds with a curated selection of new home pieces, creating a space that feels worldly yet grounded in Hill Country warmth. Every corner invites you to slow down and discover something beautiful.
The Peach Basket – A Fredericksburg favorite since 1977, The Peach Basket is a delightful mix of wellness, gifts, and — naturally — baskets. You’ll find health-conscious goodies, herbal products, and a warm welcome from owner Evelyn Washburn, who also runs Blossom Yoga in the back of the building. If you’re craving a restorative stretch between wine tastings, their yoga classes are a wonderful way to recharge body and soul.
The Hill Country has become more than just a destination for me — it’s home. Since settling here, I’ve discovered that its true beauty lies not only in the rolling vineyards or golden sunsets, but in the people who greet you like an old friend, even if it’s your first visit.
So, whether you’re coming for a weekend getaway or planning a longer stay, I hope you’ll see what I saw back in 2017 — a community rooted in connection, creativity, and the kind of hospitality that lingers long after you’ve left the table.
Welcome to my adopted home, the Texas Hill Country — where every glass poured and every meal shared reminds us that hospitality isn’t performance — it’s presence.
If you visit any of the places I’ve shared, I’d love to see your moments! Tag me @the_hill_country_bon_vivant so I can follow along and raise a virtual glass to your own Hill Country adventures.
Cheers!
